Sharafat (Balconies)
The album titled Sharafat was launched at the Sea and Freedom Festival 2019. Produced by the Edward Said National Conservatory of Music in partnership with the Tamer Institute for Community Education, this music CD includes songs and melodies by boys and girls who show the talent for composing, playing an instrument, and singing from all governorates in Palestine. The eleven songs included are: “I listen to music,” “I and you,” “When the days,” “An end to my imagination,” “The moon has risen,” “At the harbor,” “An old photo,” “September papers,” “Believable,” “Sea waves,” and “Meaning what?” The song “At the harbor” has been filmed by Sarah Akel, and the Conservatory plans to produce videos for a number of the other songs of the album Sharafat in 2020.
Sharafat is a cultural production that combines poetry, composition, drawing, and singing and features works of boys and girls aged 14 and 18 years. It will be distributed to community and school libraries as a source of inspiration and to encourage other students to write, compose, and sing. The album is the fruition of a year’s engagement in extensive workshops that aimed to enable youth who show musical talent to compose and write songs.

  •  Nour

Artist Dalal Abu Amna launched her new album, titled Nour, as part of the closing activities of the festival Jerusalem Capital of Islamic Culture at the Mormon University Theater in Jerusalem on February 20, 2020.
Nour constitutes a musical journey into Sufi poetry during which Dalal presents poetic, lyrical songs written by the great early imams and first Sufi poets, such as Ibn Arabi, Jalal Al-Din Al-Roumi, Rabaa Al-Adawiya, Al-Hallaj, and Ibn Al-Fard. She combines these with modern melodies and arrangements, composed for this creative project by the composer and artist Kinan Abu Afash.
During the launching event, artist Dalal Abu Amna was accompanied in a love performance by the leading musicians who also accompany her on the album. They include, from Palestine, Emil Bishara (musical supervision and oud), Akram Abdel Fattah (violin), Muhammad Jabali (contrabass and nay), and Maan Al-Ghoul (Arabic rhythm instruments), as well as Nasser Salama (Arabic rhythm instruments) from Jordan. The proceeds went to support the Nour Initiative and Fund that has been launched by Dalal in cooperation with Al-Quds University in Abu Dis to support scientific research in Palestine. The ceremony was held in collaboration with the Palestinian Ministry of Culture and the Edward Said National Conservatory of Music.
When the Waves
The talented Palestinian poet and singer Terez Sliman released her new album When the Waves in March 2020. The album included nine songs titled “In your name,” “But we are good,” “A rose,” “Hunger,” “You are,” “Like water,” “When tables will turn,” “When the waves,” and “In the name of love.” They feature enchanting melodies and arrangements that are based on improvisation and, at times, include elements that border on rap and electronic music. All lyrics are written by Terez. In two instances, she cooperated with Yasser Khanjar, a poet from the Occupied Golan Heights. One song includes a segment from the poem “Path Away Happiness” by Asmaa’ Azaizeh.
Composed by Palestinian composer Raymond Haddad, the accompaniment was furbished by two well-known musicians from Norway: Helge Andreas Norbakken on rhythm instruments and Eivind Aarset on guitar. When the Waves was recorded in Oslo, except for two tracks in which Terez’ singing was recorded in Nazareth, Palestine. The album was produced by Erik Hillestad of the Norwegian Production Company Kirkelig Kulturverksted (KKV), co-produced with Raymond Haddad, with support from the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and in cooperation with the Edward Said National Conservatory of Music.
