Opus Concerts

On 28th and 29th March 2019 the Opus Ensemble performed concerts at the Jerusalem Center/Mormons University, as part of the Jerusalem Nights festival, and at the Tchaikovsky Music School in Bethlehem.

Opus is an ensemble of teachers from the Edward Said National Conservatory of Music. In Western classical music, Opus refers to an artistic work or group of works. The Opus Ensemble is the continuation of an initiative started by a group of the conservatory’s teachers in 1999. This year a number of students from the National Conservatory of Music in Jerusalem joined the ensemble for the Jerusalem concert.

Guest soloist for the concerts was the Maltese oboist Estevan Ellul. Ellul has worked as a musician and music educator around the world, including Brunei, Australia, England, and is currently teaching music in Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso. He came to Palestine to volunteer his time for the concerts, and has offered to return on an annual basis as a volunteer to give workshops and classes for oboe students as well as perform concerts.

The program included oboe concertos by Marcello and Mozart; music by Latin American composers Piazzola and Carlos Gardel; and the London Trio no. 1 by Haydn.
