Breaching Barriers on the Swedish-Palestinian Exchange
In May 2015, five students (3 boys, 2 girls) and 1 teacher travelled to Sweden to visit Sjövik School for a 4 day musical cultural exchange creating music together through improvising skills and drawing on Arabic and Swedish folk music and jazz. 16 Swedish students from the Sjövik School participated in the project. This exchange aims to bring students from both Palestine and Sweden together in their respective countries to make music, learn about the different cultures and make friends. The rehearsals and seminars (given by Mohamed Najem and Swedish teachers Per Anders Skytt and Mattias Windemo) resulted in two concerts. The students engaged in different social activities plus one whole day of visiting the capital Stockholm. Prior to the week in May the 16 Swedish students had a study course to learn about the context in Palestine.
In October of 2015, a group of students from the Sjövik School will visit Palestine to engage in a similar journey that the Palestinian students experienced, in which students together will improvise music, learn and visit Palestine.
